DWI Evaluations

ACI's services include an OASAS licensed outpatient substance abuse treatment program. ACI's outpatient program provides NYS OASAS approved DWI and DUI counseling, treatment, screening, and assessment to individuals charged with DWI and ordered to receive screening and/or assessments due to their arrest.

ACI specializes in providing these services in order to address legal stipulations and screen for substance abuse and possible treatment depending on motorists' needs. When reporting for assessment, the motorist must bring (1) a copy of their DWI case history, (2) a copy of their police report, and (3) a copy of any court orders, citations, or a breathalyzer report. DWI offenders, as part of their assessment, may also be required to undergo a urine drug screening which is performed by a qualified laboratory licensed pursuant to Public Health Law.

The primary goal of our DWI/DUI treatment program is for the motorist to become aware that responsible use of alcohol absolutely rules out driving a car while under the influence. The individual successfully completing our program must leave understanding that there are no exceptions to this rule, no special circumstances, and no safe level of intoxication.

Secondly, all motorists are guided through an examination of their own reasons for using alcohol and/or other mood altering substances. Motorists completing the program should arrive at an informed decision about their own dependence or possible dependence on such substances. Through the cognitive behavioral curriculum of our specialized DWI/DUI treatment program, all motorists are expected to assume this responsibility.

At the initial visit, an interview is conducted to determine the motorists' drinking patterns and drinking history. Typically, an independent party (such as a spouse, for example) is required to verify the information obtained from the interview. During that time, a urine test may be required to see if the motorist has recently used drugs or alcohol. If the counselor determines that the motorist does not have a drinking problem, no follow up sessions will be required. If the motorist is determined to have a drinking problem, follow up sessions may be required, and all of those sessions will be completed with a licensed clinical staff member.

Testimonials

"I used to be a successful teacher. I was proud of myself and my achievements. I started using drugs and hit rock bottom. Then a friend took me to ACI. I went to detox and rehab. I am currently enrolled in the outpatient program and am doing great. I love where I am living and I love the staff at ACI. I am so grateful for the fellowship I have with my peers. I look forward to going to groups, seeing my counselors and the friends that I made. My favorite thing is “Jump Start Café” on Friday morning. I am learning how to have fun without using. I finally feel lucky to be alive.”
